Matteo was born blind, but this has never made us desist from sending him to kindergarten, just to avoid isolating himself because of his diversity. He is now 6 years old and has been introduced to elementary school from kindergarten. With this delicate passage it had to clash for the first time with the alphabet, reading and writing. He is flanked for 4 hours a week by a support teacher who has started teaching him Braille. Her Italian teacher, who is present even when the support teacher is not there, has also been committed to learning braille to be able to accompany him on this path to the fullest.
Obviously it is also up to us parents, with a specific course, to learn this new alphabet. I do not deny that it is very difficult, at almost 35, to learn to read and write only with the help of your fingers. Matteo overcame us in learningalmost immediately, both in reading and writing. Obviously, having only 6 years, he still has to work on reading whole sentences, but compared to us it is incredibly fast.
To write there are special machines called dattilobraille. We have been provided by the Centro Visuali di Brescia, which is responsible for ensuring equal educational opportunities for children like Matteo.
The operation is identical to that of the old typewriters of the past, the problem is that it does not have a keyboard with the Latin alphabet to which we are accustomed, but has only 9 keys, the combination of which determines the number of dots in relief or spaces, which determine the various letters.
Matteo is a very curious child (sometimes even dangerously!), He likes to learn new things, so it was not difficult for him to approach this new teaching. In addition to this special alphabet, he is learningto write also in ours, connecting the Latin letters to the Braille ones.
These are all basic steps to have a future that is as normal and independent as possible. For our part, me and Alessio, we try to keep up with him to be able to help him in the future, since we are aware that his life will always be uphill.
